Grinding Discs for Steel and Stainless Steel Angle Grinders

This range of Grinding Discs covers fibre discs, backing pads, stock removal discs and flap discs for angle grinders. They are used to grind welds, remove rust and scale, and prepare steel and stainless steel surfaces. The range is aimed at metalworkers, welders and installers. Brands include Starflex, PFERD and VSM.

What you will find in this category

  • Fibre discs, 125 mm, with a 22 mm or 22.23 mm bore. Grit P36-P120, with ceramic, zirconia, corundum or aluminium oxide grain. Maximum speed 80 m/s.
  • PFERD XF870 ceramic fibre discs, 125 mm, in packs of 50, in grits P36 to P120.
  • Backing pads for 125 mm fibre discs, M14 thread, ribbed or ventilated, maximum 12,200 rpm.
  • Stock removal discs T27, 125 × 6.0 mm and 230 × 6.0 mm, 22.23 mm bore, fibreglass reinforced. The PFERD E 125-7 is 125 × 7.2 mm, in packs of 10.
  • PFERD POLINOX-PNER compact grinding wheel, 125 × 6 mm, corundum grain, maximum 6100 rpm.
  • Flap discs T29, 125 mm, grit 40-100, 22.2 mm bore, maximum 12,200 rpm.

How to choose

  • Material: ceramic and zirconia grain discs are listed for stainless steel and alloys. Corundum and aluminium oxide discs are listed for carbon and structural steel.
  • Grit: P36 suits rough grinding of welds and rust. P80-P120 gives a finer finish and surface preparation.
  • Size and bore: most products are 125 mm with a 22 mm bore. The 230 mm stock removal disc needs a suitable grinder.
  • Maximum speed: check the disc rating against your grinder. Fibre discs are rated to 80 m/s, the 230 mm disc to 6650 rpm.
  • Backing pad: fibre discs need a pad. The 125 mm pads here have an M14 thread.

Typical applications

Coarse fibre discs in P36 are used for rough weld grinding, rust removal and scale removal before welding or painting. P120 discs are used for weld smoothing and finishing steel elements. Ceramic and zirconia discs are chosen for stainless steel. Stock removal discs handle heavier grinding of carbon steel and INOX. Flap discs are used on steel, INOX, chromium and titanium.

Frequently asked questions

Do fibre discs need a backing pad?

Yes. Fibre discs are mounted on a backing pad on the angle grinder. The category includes 125 mm pads with an M14 thread, rated to 12,200 rpm.

Which grain is suitable for stainless steel?

Ceramic grain discs, such as PFERD XF870 and Starflex FS971, and zirconia discs, such as Starflex FZ129, are listed for stainless steel. Several are also listed for titanium and nickel alloys.

Which grit is used for weld smoothing?

The Starflex A120 disc, with P120 corundum grain, is described for weld smoothing and surface preparation. The coarser P36 discs are described for rough grinding of welds.
