PV Power Optimisers for Panel-Level MPPT and Shade Losses
Optimisers are modules-level electronics that track the maximum power point of each PV panel separately. They reduce losses from partial shading, soiling and module mismatch. This category lists three optimisers from Tigo, Huawei and SolarEdge, with nominal DC input power from 405 W to 700 W. It is intended for installers designing PV systems.
What you will find in this category
- Tigo TS4-A-O: for modules up to 700 W, wireless communication, MC4/EVO2 connectors, 16-80 V, max. 15 A.
- Huawei SAFE DC 450W: 450 W, MC4 connectors, MBUS communication, MPPT 10-80 V, mounted on the PV module.
- SolarEdge P404: for SolarEdge inverters, rail mount, up to 405 W, 12.5-80 V, max. output current 15 A.
- All three have IP68 protection and a weight between 0.52 and 0.775 kg.
How to choose
- Module power: the nominal DC input power must cover your panel. The options are 405 W (SolarEdge), 450 W (Huawei) and 700 W (Tigo).
- Inverter compatibility: the SolarEdge P404 is designed for SolarEdge inverters. Check the inverter brand before ordering.
- Voltage and current: the input range tops out at 80 V on all three. Max. current is 15 A for Tigo and SolarEdge, and short-circuit current is 14.5 A for Huawei.
- Mounting and size: the SolarEdge mounts on the rail, and the Huawei mounts on the PV module. The Tigo measures 138.4 x 139.7 x 22.9 mm and the Huawei 75 x 140 x 28 mm.
- Connectors and monitoring: MC4 is used on all three, and the Tigo also offers EVO2. Tigo communicates wirelessly, and Huawei uses MBUS.
Typical applications
Optimisers suit roofs where panels are partly shaded by chimneys, trees or neighbouring buildings. They also help where modules face different directions or become dirty unevenly. Each panel works at its own maximum power point, so one weak module does not limit the whole string. The Huawei and SolarEdge units also include safety shutdown functions. SolarEdge's SafeDC reduces voltage to a safe 1 V.
Frequently asked questions
Which optimiser handles the highest module power?
The Tigo TS4-A-O supports modules up to 700 W. The Huawei SAFE DC is rated at 450 W and the SolarEdge P404 at up to 405 W.
Does the SolarEdge P404 work with any inverter?
No. It is designed for use with SolarEdge inverters. Confirm the inverter brand before choosing it.
What is the protection rating?
All three optimisers have IP68 protection.
