Metalwork and Welding: Discs for Grinding and Cutting Metal

Metalwork and Welding covers abrasive tools for grinding, cutting and finishing steel and stainless steel. It is intended for installers, fabricators and builders who prepare welds, remove rust and cut profiles on site or in the workshop. The range includes products from Starflex, PFERD and VSM, mostly for 125 mm angle grinders.

What you will find in this category

  • Grinding Discs - fibre discs in P36-P120, stock removal discs and compact grinding wheels for steel and INOX.
  • Metal cutting discs - 125 mm and 230 mm discs for angle grinders, plus 350 mm discs for chop saws.
  • Flap discs - T29 ceramic flap discs, 125 mm, grit 40, 60 and 80, for steel and stainless steel.

How to choose

  • Material: corundum and aluminium oxide suit carbon and structural steel. Zirconia and ceramic grain suit stainless steel, titanium and nickel alloys.
  • Grit size: P36 is for rough weld removal and rust. P80-P120 is for weld smoothing and surface preparation.
  • Diameter and bore: 125 mm is the most common size. 230 mm and 350 mm are also available. Check the bore: 22.23 mm is typical, while chop saw discs use 25.4 mm or 32 mm.
  • Maximum speed: match the disc rating to your machine. Fibre discs are rated to 80 m/s, and 125 mm cutting discs to 12,200-12,250 rpm.

Typical applications

These products are used for rough grinding and levelling of welds, rust and scale removal, and preparing steel before welding or painting. Cutting discs handle structural steel, sheet metal and profiles. Ceramic and zirconia discs are used where stainless steel needs fast, cool material removal.

Frequently asked questions

Do fibre discs need a backing pad?

Yes. Fibre discs are mounted on a backing pad. The range includes 125 mm backing pads with M14 thread for angle grinders, rated to a maximum of 12,200 rpm.

Which discs are intended for stainless steel?

Ceramic and zirconia fibre discs, such as Starflex FZ129 and FS971 or PFERD XF870, are described for stainless steel INOX. Ceramic flap discs and cutting discs marked INOX are also available.
