The surge protection device, SPBT-12/280/4 Moeller Type B+C surge arrester is an advanced surge protection system that combines the characteristics of Class B and C arresters using varistors in a single unit.
This device is primarily designed for use in the residential sector, equipped with a visual fault indication function. It provides maximum surge current withstand capability of up to 12.5kA (10/350)µs and is available in various configurations, from single to four-pole, minimising surge voltage levels to values below 1.5kV. The modern surge protection device has been designed to provide effective protection against the effects of direct and indirect lightning strikes as well as switching surges, making it an ideal solution for homes and residential buildings.
It is recommended to install the units (considering from the supply side) before metering and residual current devices. This prevents false tripping of residual current circuit breakers during surge current flow after the surge protection devices operate. A residual current circuit breaker installed before the surge protection devices is exposed to surge currents which may lead to its destruction or unnecessary tripping.

SP-B+C surge protection devices should be installed in:
- buildings with external lightning protection systems
- buildings with external overhead lines and lightning protection systems
- protected structures where internal steel construction is used as the lightning protection system
- buildings supplied by cable lines where the distance between the building and transformer station is small (possibility of high short-circuit currents)
- structures without lightning protection systems in close proximity to tall structures, where the earth electrodes of the structures are connected
