Description
Wire rope thimble protecting a steel wire rope loop against kinking and abrasion at the attachment point; galvanised steel
About the product
A wire rope thimble protects a steel wire rope loop against kinking and abrasion at the attachment point. It has a groove in which the rope sits and an eye with specified internal dimensions. It is used to form a loop in steel wire rope with wire rope grips or a crimp ferrule, ensuring that the loop retains its shape under load.
Select the thimble to suit the rope diameter — this size is intended for 8 mm rope. The product is manufactured in accordance with DIN 6899 B. The internal eye dimensions are width C = 20.5 mm and length L = 31.5 mm. Dimension A = 9.5 mm denotes the groove width, and S = 2 mm denotes the material thickness. These are nominal values according to the manufacturer's data sheet. During installation, wrap the rope around the thimble so that it sits snugly in the groove all the way round, then secure the loop with wire rope grips or a ferrule. After securing the loop, check that the thimble does not slip out.
Material: C10–C15 steel. Coating: zinc-coated. The zinc coating protects the steel against corrosion under typical conditions. Where contact with salt, chemicals or constant moisture is expected, choose a version suited to the exposure conditions. The load-bearing capacity of the loop depends on the rope and its termination method (grips or ferrule), not on the thimble alone. Select the number and spacing of grips according to the rope or grip manufacturer's recommendations.
Selection and installation
- ✓Select the thimble to suit the rope diameter – the rope should sit in the groove all the way round.
- ✓Wrap the rope around the thimble so that it sits snugly in the groove, then secure the loop with wire rope grips or a crimp ferrule.
- ✓After securing the loop, check that the thimble does not slip out.
Important
The load-bearing capacity of the loop depends on the rope and its termination method (grips or ferrule), not on the thimble alone. Select the number and spacing of grips according to the rope or grip manufacturer's recommendations.
